Tucson is often called the “Little Blueberry in the Tomato Soup that is Arizona”. This is because of it’s liberal leanings in comparison to it’s neighboring cities and towns. It is probably my favorite thing about Tucson, that we can retain our identity as an open, caring place while living peacefully with others whom identify differently. That spirit is also what helped Thrillist.com designated Tucson as a Most Gay Friendly City in a Conservative State!
Why is Tucson a Most Gay Friendly City in a Conservative State?
There are many reasons as to why Tucson is one of the most Gay-Friendly Cities in a Conservative State. For one, taking a glance at Tucson’s perfect HRC score tells you all you need to know about Tucson’s bonafides in equality and inclusion. In fact, a bunch of other Arizona cities are kicking ass as Phoenix and Tempe receive high HRC scores. Also, Bisbee has the highest concentration of LGBT couples in the Southwest.
What really sets Tucson apart has to be the civil liberties legislation that guarantees the rights of LGBT individuals and groups. I know I talk about it all the time, but the domestic partner provisions that were enacted in the 70’s were the first of their kind. They paved the way for Tucson to become the welcoming city that it is.
Additionally, Tucson has adopted the Safe Places program that we highlighted some time ago. It is a fantastic program. Safe cites are specifically chosen from different areas of town and designated with a Safe Place sticker. If you see that sticker on a window, you know that you can safely enter that place. In Tucson, you are only ever a few blocks away from a Safe Place!
