Utrecht, Netherlands is to follow a number of other European cities and install ‘gay’ crossing lights.

Two of the city’s crosswalks were changed to reflect an alternative view of how relationship’s can look. Featuring two men and two women holding hands as they cross the street, the city claimed the move was made to show how it would accept all forms of sexuality.

“They show Utrecht is a many-sided city,” Councilman Kees Geldorf said. He hoped that the lights would make people think about how they treat LGBT people.

“And they do give cause for reflection while you are waiting for the lights to change.”

The city follows a number of Austrian cities, which introduced similar lights when the country was hosting the Eurovision Song Contest in 2015.

Bringing issues to light with symbols to remind, inspire and provoke thought are big steps in the right direction towards universal love.

Darren and I already had Holland on our ‘places to visit’ Bucket List, and after seeing Utrecht take more steps towards LGBT equalty, it makes us want to visit that much more!
