Every Dog Has His Day

I’m sitting in my PolySci class at the U of A wondering why on earth I’m wasting my time in this fluorescent lit room, when I could be outside.  The warm sun is here!  But I don’t ever know what to do with my time outdoors that is productive.

I like to hike.  Especially in Reddington Pass on the east side of town, but I have dogs and I feel so badly leaving them at home.  It’s too difficult to take them on leashes, around people, on narrow paths… you know how frustrating that is.  And for puppy lovers, like myself, I like to include them in my activities.

Dog parks!  You know what I’m talking about.  It’s perfect.  The puppies get to socialize, I get to meet new people in the sunshine and then I can walk them around the park afterwards.  Emotional and physical health for all parties involved.  Check!

My favorite dog parks are at McDonald Park and Udall Park.  They are somewhat hidden, which makes it more serene.

And I know when I get my dogs socializing; I don’t need traffic and kids running around to get them all excited.  That is how bones get stolen.  And water bowls.  If I were Lucy or Snowball, my puppies, I would not be a happy camper.

I’m so excited that the city is funding these dog parks.  It’s very progressive, I would say.  So, a few tips for when you go: bring a bag for poop!  They have rakes to scoop it up… but I’d rather not be touching those.  Water is essential.  Any time I am exercising- actually all the time, I try to drink a lot of water.

Here’s why.  Dehydration- we don’t want that.  But I am also self-conscious about my weight.  Unfortunately, who isn’t this day and age?

Sometimes when your tummy thinks you’re hungry, you are actually dehydrated.  So drink some water, rather than eating a bag of chips.  #1 it is way healthier for you and #2 you’re not eating needlessly.  I feel so good afterwards because I have actually gotten exercise and didn’t counteract the benefits of that for junk food.  Also, bring along a power bar.  You can choose to eat healthily and these bars will keep you energized and your tummy full because they are packed with nutrients.  I’ll talk more about my weight issues in a later blog, but there was a clip.

One last tip.  Pay attention to your dogs.  Play with them.  Have fun!
