Pope Francis does it again! In a modern world that has disregarded the dogmatic trappings of bloated, organized religion, the forward-looking Pope keeps trying to drag the institution into the future. I’m not sure that it will get me back to the church, but his efforts are definitely making the church more palatable. For the first time in my life it seems the Catholic church is actually trying to understand and lighten the burdens of it’s constituency… living people.
Why is the Church Now Backing Civil Unions for Same-Sex Couples?
The reason begins and ends with Pope Francis. The modern, Latin American born Pope has actually lived a truly Christian life, a stance I don’t see reflected in the higher tiers of religion. In his past life, he directly served the poor and afflicted, experiences that have informed his world-view when it comes to dealing with others whom are not like him.
I think Pope Francis says it best himself, “They’re (Our Gay Community) children of God and have a right to a family”. The fact that these words are controversial shows how far we have left to climb in our unending war for universal protections and basic human rights. But they are true words, and the more minds open to them, the better!
Will My Life Change Because the Catholic Church Now Backs Civil Unions for Same-Sex Couples?
It might, that depends on your proximity to the Tucson Catholic Church or Catholic Churchgoers. Tucson already has numerous legal protections for same-sex civil unions, so your life here probably won’t change too much. However, if you are one of the millions of disaffected Catholics and Christians, this could be an olive branch from an institution that failed you long ago. If you come from a religious family, this could be your opportunity to reach out to your loved-ones with the power of doctrine backing your message.
Every single step forward takes us from where we were to where we are going, and that is cause for celebration. GayTucson thanks Pope Francis for actually caring about people and trying to improve the condition for the human race. Here’s hoping we can have more figures in power that care about themselves less than the people they are entrusted to protect.
