The very idea of “traditional marriage” being between one man and one woman is a misnomer. Since it’s inception, marriage was never about the relationship betweeen a man and a woman. It wasn’t even about family structure and having two parents to raise children. “Traditional marriage” was originally meant to create ties between families and develop a larger labor force for the family.
It was then used as a method for fathers to move ownershp rights over the daughters, and receive compensation for those ownership rights. During this time, monogamy was not preferred and the man was expected to “acquire” as many wives as possible.
It is important to understand this history when confronted with peoples warped justifications for discrimination. The definition of “traditional marraige” has changed repeatedly through history and I believe that we are inthe midstof another redefinition. Marriage is about love and dedication; you are promising the rest of your life to the one you love. Let nothing come between you!
