It’s always refreshing when the youth of today seems to understand the importance of the social justice initiatives we have been promoting for decades.  Our unique and amazing LGBTQ community is an integral competent of the Tucson community at large, and I am always happy to see this fact recognized and celebrated.  In this spirit, a group of amazing students from a local high school have started a social justice project to end the constant bullying faced by LGBTQ youths and welcome them to the community.

It All Started in AP Language Arts

As an assignment AP Language Arts, the students had to come up with a social justice project that they believed could be accomplished within the year. They chose to do their project about the LGBTQ community in their school.

The students recognized the bullying and harassment that were taking place at their school and wanted to spread awareness and let the LGBTQ community know that they are supported and loved. That they shouldn’t have to be afraid to be themselves and worry that they will be hurt at our school.

For their second semester project, they had a poster where students could take different colored paint and place their hand print on it. Each hand represented the support that they have for the LGBTQ community, hand in hand.

And End to Bullying and Harassment

The main goal for this project was to help stop the bullying and harassment that can lead to suicide.  For this, the students made brochures referencing LGBTQ statistics and presented the information in their school, complete with interviews from the LGBTQ community.

That project was recently posted in their school for everyone to see and they can’t wait to see the difference in our community. Now they have bigger plans, as they not only want to show support in their school, we want to spread it locally.

They’ve made t-shirts and stickers to show support for the LGBTQ community which are given out to in school. This incredible group of students wants to show the love and support they have for everyone so that they don’t have to hide and can be happy with whomever they are. The 21st century is about change and these amazing students wish to be apart of it!
