Advocate Names Tucson in Top 10 List of Best Places for Gays and Lesbians to Live
In the March 27, 2007 issue, The Advocate named the Best Places for Gays and Lesbians to Live. Tucson, AZ makes the list, and this still holds true today.
The Advocate is a news magazine for the LGBT community and it is published twice a month. The article, titled “Where We Live”, focuses on the top 10 cities (outside the usual gay urban neighborhoods) for openly gay and lesbian singles and families to live.
The cities they choose are gay-friendly with a small town feel and big city amenities. Other criteria necessary to make their list: median household income, quality of public schools, condos, retirement communities and the city’s achievements in working to create a gay-friendly community.
Tucson fits the bill! According to the Advocate, the median house cost is $202,400 and the median household income is $34,493– making Tucson an affordable place to live.
Gay public officials Paula Aboud (state senator) and Karin Uhlich (city council member) are features in the article.
Other considerations are Pro-gay laws and policies including domestic partner registry and no discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in housing, employment, and public accommodations. Tucson continues to evolve in these areas. See what the Human Right’s Campaign has to say about Tucson.
One correction to note, the advocate states that Tucson does not have a gay community center. We have a great gay community center called Wingspan. We’ll forgive them. Hey, we still made the top 10.
Always here to help,
