The Tucson Police Department (TPD) starts a new program called Safe Place, where members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender & Queer (LGBTQ) community can go get help at a local business if they’ve been the victim of a hate crime or fear that they might become the victim of one.
Here in T-town we know that our community is tightly knit. When we think of violence and hate crimes the bustling metropolis of Phoenix comes to mind long before Tucson. However, hate can pop up unexpectedly anywhere, even in our sunny little southwest paradise. It is comforting to know that TPD is looking out for our community. No doubt a result of Police Chief Magnus being an openly gay man in a traditionally conservative field.
Local businesses get training and a rainbow sticker to put in the store windows. Look for the sticker. It says “Safe Place” over a rainbow field in the shape of a badge. The Safe Place program is one of the many reasons that Tucson frequently ranks as Arizona’s most friendly LGBTQ city, along with the supportive LGBTQ resource center at the University of Arizona, and a robust queer community.
We wrote a whole article about the new program.
