Gay Marriage Equality has become an unstoppable juggernaut that will ultimately redefine how we treat eachother. Given the opportunity to discriminate against anything they don’t understand, politicians have supressed many freedoms and opportunities afforded to gay and lesbian couples. After running up into a wall of opposition to our basic human rights for decades, we have finally reached the watershed moment.
The New Orleans-based 5th Circuit Court of Appeals has set the week of January 5th as the date to begin hearings. With jurisdiction over most of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas (yes, that Texas), the 5th Circuit could be one of the final remaining bastions of discrimination by the time the hearings roll around.
The court will be hearing arguements from Lousiana and Texas, where district judges in the respective states reached opposite conclusions on identical cases (Texas judge threw out marriage discrimination, Louisiana judge upholded it). In fact, the Lousiana ruling was the only one in the nation which okay’d marriage discrimination, making this hearing in the appeals court very important for our sustained movement towards marriage equality.
While we don’t yet know who the judges will be, we do know the 5th Circuit has been packed with Republican judges, so opponents of equality are banking on a successful ruling in order to keep fighting. It’s on their home turf, but their arguements are insipid and full of logical fallacy, so we are cautiously optimistic for a positive result from the hearings.
Its been a long, hard fight for our basic human rights, but we are almost there! I can see a path to marriage equality when I never thought it would happen in my lifetime. Thank you to all the brave souls who have struggled for our freedoms and I hope we can begin next year with a more accepting and enlightend nation!
