Talented Tucson Angela Soliz recently debuted some of her brand new works at Tucson Gallery. Angela is an acrylic painter and educator whose work helps people uncover identity and build purpose-driven lives from the inside out. With 20 years of experience painting and teaching, Angela brings a grounded, courageous approach to creative transformation. She’s a teaching artist with Free Arts Arizona (supporting youth in foster care), teaches at The Drawing Studio, and serves as adjunct faculty at Pima Community College. When she’s not in the studio, you’ll likely find her climbing (literal and metaphorical) mountains, a practice that informs her resilience and vision.

Art as Freedom: Desert Color, Chicano Roots & Ecstatic Joy

In her own words, Angela’s art is a contribution to human dignity through the exploration of self-liberation. She seeks to capture the essence of ecstatic joy: the often overlooked counterpart to despair, grief, and loss. For Angela, painting is the practice of freedom, an invitation to radical acceptance and wonder.

Her visual language is shaped by the Southern Arizona desert and her Chicano roots, drawing on the cultural imagination of magical realism. Working primarily in acrylics (often alongside ink, texture, and modeling paste), she paints with her whole body, layering color, building tactile surfaces, and embracing improvisation and curiosity. The result is work that vibrates with movement, texture, and meaning, reminding viewers of their own courage, wonder, and inner divinity.
