Known as the Mecca for art in Arizona, there is something special about the way Tucson welcomes creativity. Hundreds of Murals brighten our city streets, local artists share stories rooted in identity and culture, and LGBTQ+ residents and visitors can find community woven throughout the city.
That spirit recently received exciting recognition by Paul Henrey in a new GayCities travel feature celebrating Tucson’s artistic queer side. We were fortunate to meet Paul, when he stopped by to see the gallery and gather information for his upcoming article. The article includes The Tucson Gallery and Tucson Trolley Tours as part of the experience that makes Tucson worth exploring.
GayCities Celebrates Tucson as an LGBTQ+-Friendly Arts Destination
In the feature, GayCities introduces Tucson as a welcoming desert city where LGBTQ+ community is not limited to one neighborhood. Instead, queer life and creativity can be found throughout the city, in its murals, galleries, restaurants, historic spaces and locally owned gathering places.
For those of us who love Tucson, that description feels familiar. Our city has long been shaped by artists, independent, local “mom & pop” shops and community builders who make room for people to connect and express themselves.

The Tucson Gallery and Tucson Trolley Tours Join the Story
GayCities highlights The Tucson Gallery as a stop for visitors interested in discovering local art and the creative people behind it. Located downtown, the gallery features work from Tucson artists and provides a welcoming place to explore the city’s artistic character.
During the visit to the Tucson Gallery, Paul (author of the GayCities article) also met Camila Ibarra one of Tucson’s famous mural artists along with queer artists Angela Soliz & Victor Navarro. Their work and perspectives reflect the power of art to connect people across backgrounds, cultures and experiences.
The article also mentions Tucson Trolley Tours, which begin at The Tucson Gallery and offer an engaging way to discover Tucson’s public art, including the colorful murals that have helped define the city’s visual identity. For visitors and locals alike, a 50+ mural-focused trolley tour is a memorable way to experience Tucson’s creativity beyond the gallery walls.
Experience Tucson’s LGBTQ+ Art Scene for Yourself
Recognition from GayCities is worth celebrating because it reflects something locals already know: Tucson is a city where LGBTQ+ people, artists and allies help create a vibrant, welcoming community.
