Relationships – How Hey, King! Deals with Conflict in the Creative Process

Tony Ray Baker
I think you touched well on the truth and I and it’s a little raw and it hurts a little bit and I like that about. Sorry, is that we’ve also seen where you’re in a situation and you’re both supposed to be on that same team?

Tony Ray Baker
But it doesn’t come through because there’s some sort of weird stuff going on in each person, that’s preventing the love to occur. It’s just all about antagonizing each other and we’ve seen that and I think many people have been through these and you guys hit on them very personally. And I like that about these videos.

Natalie London
I think, especially during covid. Like it made a lot of relationships like you’re just with each other. Yeah, you know, we spend all of our time together. We work together. We, you know, we’re the band together. And so it’s easy when you’re feeling bad or insecure about yourself to start projecting that on the person that you’re closest with. And to try to, you know, break away from that cycle was what we were trying to show both in this song and with the video. Just to kind of like lighten it sometimes and and get back to I don’t know. How would you put it?

Taylor Plecity
Us. To get back to us. Yeah you know without any of your own insecurity is being projected onto like the love, like, and yeah. What I really loved about that video though, was they were just so down to play and actors were amazing. I worked with Eileen on the very first project that actually brought me out to Tucson from La. Back when I was still just going to come out here and shoot for three months and we just like remained friends. And I was like, hey would you be down for this? And she was like, yeah, also my husband would work really well for the male part and I was like, what? And she’s like, yeah we’ve been married for what was it? 70?

Natalie London
Yea they’re 70s so like married 40 years. Yeah, and they are there dynamic was incredible and the fact that they let us into their home and we could not have set deck that place better than they already had.

Taylor Plecity
That was their actual home!

Natalie London
We had Valentine’s notes on the wall to each other from years back.

Taylor Plecity
We changed a couple things but like for the most part like that kitchen was like their kitchen. It was beautiful to shoot in.

Tony Ray Baker
It felt very authentic. So, I was pretty impressed with the stage. I thought, wow, these guys really hid some stuff. But why not?

Natalie London
We would have. But we got there and were like, oh!

Taylor Plecity
I had like buckets of, like containers of random stuff that we were going to like, put around things. and we did not have to, like that hallway. It’s their actual hallway.

Natalie London
We were actually able to do the hats and glasses they wore. Yeah, it was adorable.

Taylor Plecity
That was also the first song that was a love song in a sense. But it was, it was a really
interesting co-write because she came up with the idea and was like, hey, I was wondering if I get your thoughts on this. And I was like, NO. No, I don’t like this. This showcase is me in my… in because I was really, really depressed. And she was, you know, but she’s an artist and I try to give her not only the validity in being able to write whatever she can, but nothing is off-limits.

But I think, when she brought it up as like a co-write thing, I was a little bit overwhelmed because it was very personal. Like sorry, even though it’s kind of fun it was a very personal like situation that Natalie and I were going through. And then when we started the like actual co-write we’ve made it into like this weird argument.

Natalie London
Yeah, it added a whole other element. Yeah. I actually thought it was funny. That’s like having tattooed across your arm. “Jesus, pray. love.” Like how much do I need to explain to this person? I am not your enemy like when you’re in a dark place. Like, I’m not your enemy, I’m on your side.

Tony Ray Baker
I’m on the same team.

Taylor Plecity
Exactly!

Natalie London
Exactly!

Tony Ray Baker
And you brought that out, and I think it’s vulnerable and it hurts and you don’t want to do it when it really it’s truth.

Taylor Plecity
Oh, a hundred percent. I think we shelved it for less than two months before I was like, okay, no. Let’s finish this.

Tony Ray Baker
Yeah, it’s uncomfortable and I get that… when that’s another thing I love about what you’ve done there is that you made me have a little angst around that. I’m like, oh, I’ve had that to happen sometimes with my partner. And I’m like, we always look at each other and say “we’re on the same team.”

Natalie London
That’s awesome.

Tony Ray Baker
We’re on the same team were arguing about something. It’s so stupid, we’re on the same team, and it’s what you’re talking about. My partner and I work together, 24/7 and have for 10 years.

Natalie London
Wow.

Tony Ray Baker
Everything together, we’re never apart and sometimes, you know, tripping over each other in the house during covid-19 little bit, you know, caused angst. So, I love that you guys hit on some of that stuff.
